Michael entered Clare College as a graduate student in 1998 and was awarded a PhD degree in July 2004. These bare facts do not reveal his truly remarkable achievements…
It was no surprise that his fellow-graduates students elected him as President of the MCR in 2000. His warm, outgoing and caring personality, as well as his experience in life, made him a natural choice. As President, he showed himself to be a shrewd and constructive negotiator, finding solutions that had not been seen by others. At the then Master’s request, he conducted a disability audit of the College that has led to many lasting improvements.
At the moving funeral service in the College Chapel on 27 November 2004, his supervisor, Dr Duveen summed up the feelings of all who knew Michael:
“He was a remarkable man, blessed with extraordinary gifts. Intellectual gifts of course, but also blessed with extraordinary human qualities which were no less the source of the affection, esteem and respect in which he was held by those who knew him. He will be sorely missed, and in celebrating his life we should recall not only his achievements but also the example he gave us of the possibility of doing things in a different way.”
Mike’s thesis has been published by the Disability Rights Commission. For further information please contact info@mikedevenney.org.uk
